Introduction
This is that requisite page about the author of the site. If you don't want to know random things about me, then ye best turn back now. I'll do my best not to go on for 47 pages like this guy.
Avatar
Webdesigner, programmer,
linguist, anthropologist,
author, artist, and goth.
Persona
I live in Portland Oregon (45°31' North, 122°41' West) with Jesse, Amariah, and our cats: Aubergine (Obi) (mine), Athena (Tina), and Gandalf (both theirs).
Currently working on my masters in computer science at PSU though I'll be transfering to Johns Hopkins this fall. I spend less of my time than I'd like at Free Geek teaching, building computers, doing sysadmin work, and serving as Chair on the Board of Directors. And more time than I should at the CAT doing system administration and working on LDAP.
What free time I have I spend reading, gaming (roleplaying, video games, board/card games), snowboarding, biking, enjoying fine food & drink (japanese, thai, vietnamese, persian, lebanese; coffee, tea, wine), and dancing (club, Lindy Hop, Charleston, Waltz).
Musica
I became interested in the goth scene before it became popular in the late 1990s and remain interested though its popularity has waned. Aside from an affinity for dark rich colors and a particular fixation on aesthetics, I'm interested in various forms of gothic electronica (industrial, trance, darkwave, EBM, fututepop). If you're interested in electronica of any variety (house, trance, industrial, techno, breakbeat, jungle, downtempo), this site has an excellent family tree of over a hundred genres and nearly three hours of samples so you can get an idea of what people are talking about. (Bah, it looks like v2.0 is down while he's working on v3.)
Other than electronica I'm also interested in early alternative, punk, ska, folk, bluegrass, indy bands, Tom Waits (however you'd classify him), swing music, the occasional power pop or riot grrl, and a wide selection of foreign music: Mexican, Brasilian, Russian, Japanese, Arabic, Tango (I have some nice electronica/tango actually), Finnish operatic death metal...
Computer
At present I belong to three computers. Xenobia is a dual-core 2.16GHz MacBook Pro running MacOSX 10.4 and is where I spend most of my online time. Alas, Fuchikoma, my old 1GHz PowerBook G4 took a catastrophic dive and so will have to be mined out for parts to finance his replacement.
Balthazar is a 350MHz Pentium-II desktop running Gentoo GNU/Linux (kernel 2.6.15-r1 or so). Bal is a server and so I usually don't have to mess with him directly. Or at least that'll be the case once he's fully set up. Or, at least that's what I'd like to believe.
And then there's the newest addition (until Xenobia): Elsamelys a Sharp Zaurus SL-C3100: a "PDA" with a 4GB HDD which runs Linux (Lineo uLinux 2.4.20). I'm still getting Elys all set up the way I want her, part of which will have to wait until I get the drivers for my CF 802.11b card compiled so I can do wireless. For more about my travails with Elys, see my page on the SL-C3100 and the associated f/oss blog.
And at work I get to abuse both Sting (a Solaris 10 box) and Vitamin (an Ubuntu GNU/Linux box) who live in my cube in the Zone.
